The close proximity of the gate and fence helps to give a sense of scale to this big beech in the parkland and woodland landscape around Culzean Castle. Although beech is quite a smooth-barked tree its trunks can be wonderfully sculputral with cracks and recesses at different scales, producing all sorts of interesting patterns.
