I came by this tree during a survey of mosses and liverworts along the rocky stream. There’s a big patch of polypody fern growing on its trunk. The stone wall is typical of many in the Lake District. It was on the day of this survey that my mobile phone stopped working. That was many years ago. Some might say “many moons ago” but that’s one of those phrases I just can’t ever bring myself to say; it’s a certain type of person’s sort of phrase and I’m not that type. What I can say, this being the 21st century, is that it was… hang on, just counting… five phones ago. Update about 15 minutes later: just remembered another one, so it was actually six phones ago.
