
Cask = a big wooden thing that alcoholic drinks such as whisky and sherry are stored in. “You mean a barrel, then?” Yes. I always think “barrel” rather than “cask” because barrel is a word I’ve always known, along with that unmistakable visual image, but cask was a new word for me when I did these drawings in 2017. Apparently we should call them casks if we’re to be correct. A barrel is a specific sub-type of cask: 180-200 litres and made of oak. I’ve gone and called them barrels elsewhere in the text for other whisky drawings on this website. I suppose I’d better go through and change all the “barrels” to “casks”. Well, yes but not right now. So if you see “barrel” further on, it’s OK – I know about it and I’m on the case…
