A wonderful hill made of Tertiary basalt (a relatively young, dark-coloured igneous rock) and with a stepped profile reflecting the way the basalt was originally poured out in liquid form as a series of layers, one above the other. This is the north-facing side of the hill. A dark slope. Conditions here are cool, humid and shaded, with lines of steep, damp cliffs whose vegetation includes some rare montane plant species.
